Rose and Sweet Pea Show 2023

The Burwash Horticultural Society Rose and Sweet Pea Show held on Saturday 10th June was another great success. There were many entries in the rose classes thanks to the preceding warm weather which seemed to encourage roses to flower vigorously this year. Sweet pea numbers were also encouraging but delphinium numbers continue to be disappointing. There were some lovely vases of flowers and the new class for a display of succulents was interesting.

The craft entries were down in number but there were some excellent quilted items, cookery entry numbers were also on the low side.

The children’s classes were very encouraging with 14 entries thanks to the Beavers getting involved in these classes.

The judges were very impressed by the high standard of exhibits on display and found it a hard job to select the winning entries particularly in the rose classes.

The show was attended by many visitors who enjoyed the mixture of flowers and handicrafts and the refreshments proved very popular again so kindly provided by Sue Kork and Lynda Maude-Roxby, many thanks to all those who made the delicious cakes enjoyed by everyone.

The Queens Challenge Cup for the best Delphinium in the show was won by Philip Cutler and the Harry Relf Trophy for the best vase of sweet peas was won by Lynda Maude-Roxby.

The Court Farm Cup for the highest points in Roses was won by Fiona Barkley and the Kent & Sussex Courier rose bowl for the best rose exhibit together with the Ron Partner £10 Rose voucher was won by newcomer Brian McFarland.

In the Children’s Classes the Elizabeth Reid Cup was won by Bella Jasbbani.

The Paignton Cup for the best exhibit in handicraft classes was won by Sally Maude-Roxby

In the painting class, the Ward Memorial Cup was won by Helene King.
